In a hotel, daily operations extend beyond guest areas. Every day, food, drinks, materials, equipment and other supplies must be brought in and taken out without disrupting the establishment's operations.

At the Bordoy Alcudia Bay Hotel, in Port d’Alcúdia, Mallorca, this requirement was met by installing a Manusa high-speed stackable door at one of its service entrances.

The project shows how a solution commonly found in industrial and logistics settings can also address a specific need in hotel logistics: facilitating the frequent movement of goods in an outdoor area designated for the hotel’s internal operations.

The hotel’s logistics also pass through its doors

When we think of hotel doors, our attention tends to focus on the main entrance, the reception area or the communal spaces.

However, behind the scenes – away from the guests’ view – there are internal operations that need to run smoothly every day: goods reception, food and drink deliveries, removal of materials, maintenance and staff movement.

These areas have different requirements to those of a main entrance. The priority is to have a door suited to the frequent movement of goods and supplies and to the specific conditions of the space.

At Bordoy Alcudia Bay, the solution was installed at precisely one of these points: an entrance situated at the back of the premises and integrated in the hotel’s day-to-day operations.

The behind-the-scenes operations that guests do not see are also part of the hotel’s daily operation.

An entrance for receiving goods must ensure that supplies, equipment and staff can move through it efficiently, and that the opening and closing of the door keeps pace with the normal rhythm of work.

A high-speed stackable door for the goods entrance

For this part of the hotel, a high-speed stackable door was chosen – a vertical-opening solution comprising a flexible curtain that rises and stacks progressively at the top.

Transverse reinforcements provide robustness and stability to the structure. This configuration is designed for intensive use and can be installed both indoors and outdoors, depending on the project requirements.

At the Bordoy Alcudia Bay Hotel, the door ensures the opening remains accessible while in use, thereby facilitating the movement of supplies that form part of the establishment’s daily operations.

A door designed for daily operations

Goods reception is part of a hotel’s daily operations. Automating this process ensures the door is prepared to handle the frequent movement of staff, food, supplies and equipment.

Why choose a high-speed stackable door for a hotel?

A high-speed stackable door may be suitable for certain service areas in a hotel because it combines vertical opening, suitability for frequent use and for outdoor spaces, facilitating the movement of goods and supplies without requiring any lateral clearance during opening.

In this project, the solution specifically addresses five requirements:

  • To facilitate the flow of goods. The vertical opening leaves the space clear for the movement of supplies and equipment.

  • To adapt to frequent use. The entrance forms part of the hotel’s daily operations and requires repeated cycles of opening and closing.

  • To contribute to energy efficiency. Its rapid opening and closing help reduce the time during which the interior and exterior remain connected, limiting the loss of temperature-controlled air in a service area with frequent traffic.

  • To separate the exterior from the interior. When closed, the door separates the service area from the outside.

  • To make the most of the space. The curtain is retracted at the top, requiring no lateral space to open the door.

The application shows that certain industrial doors for hotels can be a sensible option when an area of the premises has requirements similar to those of a logistics environment, combining operational flexibility, separation between areas and a more efficient use of air conditioning.

High-speed stackable doors

High-speed stackable doors are designed for heavy-duty applications and can be used in external doors. Their vertical opening mechanism and the cross-reinforcements in the curtain allow them to be adapted to different operating conditions and opening dimensions.

A door to an area that is not normally visible

The location of this door is also what makes the project interesting.

It is not located in the lobby, nor is it intended for guest flow. It is located in a functional part of the building, where the priority is to keep internal activities running uninterrupted.

A main entrance must respond to the flow of people, ensure comfort and complement the architecture. A car park must manage the movement of vehicles. A loading bay or service entrance, on the other hand, may require a high-speed door suited to the movement of supplies.

The project thus broadens our understanding of hotel doors: the solution must be chosen according to the actual function of each space.

The part of the hotel that also has to function

Kitchens, storerooms, loading and unloading areas, and service entrances are all part of the daily operations that take place out of sight of guests, but which are essential for keeping the establishment running.

The right door depends on who uses it, what needs to pass through it, and how often

Doors for hotel service and logistics areas

The installation at Bordoy Alcudia Bay demonstrates that a hotel’s requirements should not be considered solely from the perspective of guest entry.

Within the same establishment, automatic and high-speed hotel doors designed for different functions can coexist. Manusa’s own range for hotels and restaurants offers specific solutions tailored to different areas of the building.

Main entrances. Sliding or revolving doors to manage guest flow and the connection between indoors and outdoors.

Interior areas. Automatic solutions to facilitate movement between specific spaces.

Car parks. High-speed doors designed for frequent vehicle traffic.

Restricted areas. Doors that can be integrated with access control systems according to the establishment’s requirements.

Kitchens, storerooms and goods entrances. Solutions tailored to internal operations, staff movement and the receipt of supplies.

Approaching the hotel project in this way allows each door to be selected based on its function, frequency of use, location and type of traffic, rather than applying a single solution to the entire building.

Hotel logistics beyond the main entrance

Logistical requirements are not exclusive to factories or distribution centres. A hotel’s service areas also require doors capable of handling the daily flow of goods, supplies and staff.

Every area of the hotel requires a different solution

The right door for the lobby is not necessarily the right one for a car park, a kitchen, a storeroom or a goods entrance.

Analysing traffic type, frequency of use, opening dimensions, location, and environmental conditions helps us identify the right solution for every area of the establishment.

Bordoy Alcudia Bay: a different application for the stackable door

The value of this project lies in the specific problem it solves.

The installation shows how a high-speed stackable door can be used in the hospitality sector to organise a service entrance for the daily movement of goods and supplies.

It also broadens the usual scope of this type of product. High-speed stackable doors are primarily associated with industry, logistics or the food industry, where frequent traffic and outdoor installations are commonplace.

The case of Bordoy Alcudia Bay shows that these same requirements can arise in other buildings. The decisive factor is not just the sector, but the function of the space and how it is actually used.

In this hotel, that requirement was located far from the main entrance, specifically in one of the areas that help everything else to run smoothly.
