Solutions Automatic doors for platform closing
Manusa, the leading company in smart accesses and automatic doors, recently launched a project at the Cuca de Llum funicular railway that connects the city of Barcelona with the Tibidabo amusement park. It installed 24 automatic platform-closing doors on four platforms at two stations.

This funicular railway has recently been renovated, eliminating the old carriages, the old tracks and the catenary in favour of a new layout with new carriages.

The design of the carriages is open-plan, innovative and advanced, providing provides more space inside and a panoramic view of the whole journey. The funicular railway is now faster and has increased its capacity to 252 passengers per journey.

The automatic doors installed by Manusa guarantee the safety and comfort of passengers. These accesses are synchronised with the funicular train so that the doors open and close automatically when the vehicle arrives or leaves. This prevents incidents such as people or objects falling onto the tracks, someone being run over, or the stoppage of normal funicular railway operations.

These smart accesses by Manusa have been specifically custom designed for this project. "We started from a standard product and had to adapt it to meet all the safety demands required by transport environments", explains Manel Cañadas, head of transport at Manusa.

The company has been designing, manufacturing and installing automatic doors and smart accesses worldwide for over 50 years. This extensive experience has enabled them to confidently implement the automation of the platform accesses at the funicular railway in Barcelona.

"On this occasion, we did not have a single, flat platform, so the doors had to be at different levels. We created a modular structure that we repeated at the different levels where people can access the funicular train", says Rubén Sebastià, from the Manusa R&D department.

Creativity, high technology, adaptability and experience have enabled Manusa to help improve the functionality of this emblematic funicular railway that has been running since the start of the 20th century.
